Visa to Botswana

If you are a foreign national let us know what passport you hold and we will inform you whether or not you are obliged to apply for visa to Botswana.

Czech citizens can enter and stay in the Republic of Botswana without a visa. Visa-free travel refers to tourism, business trips and official visits by representatives of the state. The total cumulative stay in Botswana must not exceed a total of 90 days (cumulatively) within one year.

In addition to a valid travel document all foreigners should declare the purpose of their entry into Botswana, declare who is inviting them to Botswana and when they intend to leave the country. For this reason documents such as a return ticket, accommodation confirmation, contact to the inviting person, etc. may be required upon entry into the country.

As some Botswana immigration officials are repeatedly unaware of the visa-free regime for Czech citizens, we recommend that travelers take a copy of the note from embassy's website.

Frequently asked questions

Unlike in Europe the seasonality in Botswana is upside down and there is not one good season. Choosing the right time depends on what you want to experience in Botswana.

Between November and March there is a hot summer with good rainfall and greater temperature differences between night and day, whilst from April to August the soil is dry and temperatures stable (except on cold nights).

A then there is the popular Okavango delta which is a story for it's own. The delta is very much dependent on rainfalls in tropical forests of central Africa. Beginning of the new cycle is in November when the first drops of rain start to fall and the landscape is finally turning green. In December precipation increases and rains in the tropical forests of central Africa begin to cause a rise of river levels although the new waters take almost two months to reach the Okavango delta. In February floods begin and fish can be spear hunted. In April the landscape is flooded at a speed of one kilometer per day, which means that in four months the delta will fill up completely. Insects, the first link in the food chain, appear in May. In June, the delta is half-flooded and it is the month when the greatest miracle can be seen - during the day the delta is covered with pink daylilies while white water lilies bloom at night. At this time water areas are transformed into a network of water channels. Nile crocodiles appear in July and baboons can be seen as well. In August the flood is at its maximum, the water is crystal and its evaporation begins. In September drought strikes again resulting in lack of oxygen to the fish the following month and water evaporation.

Yes you can combine it with any country you want. Our client's favorite is a combination of Botswana with a short stop-over in Dubai, where you can spend a few days on the beach or shopping. If you prefer the african seas maybe you would like to consider a stay in Mozambique - a hidden gem of African leisure travel. Our personal favorite is a combination of Botswana with the Victoria Falls where you can visit three states in a short amount of time - Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana itself. If you don't want to go deep into Botswan's hinterland like Kalahari or Okavango just head over to the nearby Chobe Nature Reserve which is especially famous for elephant herds. This option may save you a lot of money as it offers the possibility of cheaper campsites and you don't need to pay for air transfer into Botswana's heartand.

The best time is from spring to summer months when the Okavango delta is flooded with water. However beautiful photographs can be taken throughout the year. From September to December you will probably see drier landscape but the handicap will be offset by stunning sunrises and sunsets giving great light conditions and color temperatures. In November some parts of the delta can be sailed, the sky is mesmerisingly blue and visibility is great for taking photographs of diverse birds and insects.

Staff in camps and local rangers always try to facilitate the best conditions for photographers as they share real-time information about appereance of interesting objects or animals so that you can promptly change locations as needed. Great shots can also be taken from the sky while flying over campsites as planes fly at low altitudes.

Weather

The weather in Botswana is only partially dry. Although it is dry and hot for most of the year there is also a rainy season that come in the summer months. Rainfall is unpredictable and strongly regional which in practice means that while there is heavy rainfall in one area 10 kilometers away the situation may be totally different. After these heavy rains the sun usually dawns quickly causing the water to evaporate into air instead of soaking up into the land.

The above-mentioned summer season starts in November and ends in March. It usually comes with high temperatures, quick rain showers, clouds and temporarily lower temperatures. The winter season starts in May and ends in August during which the land is absolutely dry. Days are always sunny and pleasantly warm even in winter but night temperatures may fall below freezing point in certain areas of the southwest.

The period between summer and winter, that means April, early May, September and October are still marked by drought altough days are slightly cooler than in summer and nights are warmer than in winter.

The following chart shows the minimum and maximum air temperatures in Botswana (Gaborone):

January February March April May June July August September October November December
Average maximum 33 32 31 29 26 23 23 26 30 32 32 33
Average minimum 20 19 17 13 8 5 4 7 12 16 18 19

Location

Botswana is located in the southern part of Africa and in direct neighborhood of South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia and it is one of the few countries that do not have access to sea. Nonetheless with a total area of over 581,730 km² and a remarkable geography it offers travelers unique ways of enjoying nature and watching a completely authentic safari. Botswana has several nature reserves, parks and protected areas such as the Chobe National Park, Kalahari Nature Reserve and many other. The most attractive places are likely to be found around the Okavango delta which gives life to the entire area including the wild animals. Most cities including the capital of Gaborone are concentrated in the southeastern region of the country along the border with South Africa. There are various ways to get to Botswana from Czech Republic however each one of them requires at least two transfers. A typical flight route from Prague with Ethiopian Airlines will take you via Addis Abeba to Gaborone and the whole journey takes up to 16 hours.
