Bangladesh

Bangladesh

The world's seventh most populous country lies in the delta of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. The rivers are fertile blessing for the country as they help feed a country with highest population density in the world. Despite the high yields however the production is still not big enough to feed everyone when the annual monsoons, floods and typhoons hit the coast and start to melt down parts of this precious land.

The relatively high yields of agriculture, which produces rice, wheat, corn, cotton, jute and tea,  is not sufficient to match the high population growth making the country one of the poorest in the world. Supply shortage is not only an agricultural problem. The country has low quality infrastructure and poor condition of roads and railways, hence why maritime transporation is important for Bangladesh. Waterways are also used in tourism, especially in the area of Sundarban which is home to the largest mangrove vegetation in the world and the famous Bengal tiger. Another place worh a visit is the Rangamati mountain range that overseas the Lake Kaptai. As you start to descend the mountains towards neighbouring Burma you will gradually reach the country's border where mountains turn into some of the most attractive pristine beaches, which are known to be the longest in the world. They bear the name Cox's Bazaar.

Bangladesh has a lot to offer. Although 83% of the population claim to be muslims there are also many Buddhist and Hindu monuments scattered throughout the country, including Paharpur, the only and largest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalayas, or a 15th-century mosque in Bagherhat. Interenstingly both of these monuments are listed as UNESCO World heritige sites. The capital of Dhaka is characterized by a number of buildings symbolizing the struggle for Bengali identity, language and statehood. One of those buildings is a modern and unique house of parliament. Apart from architecture the country is home to gigantic tea plantations in Srimongal and tribal villages and tropical forests around them.

Location

Bangladesh is a unique country as it is geographicaly embedded in India and only slightly adjacent to Burma. The capital Dhaka is located almost in the heart of the green area and near it flows the river Jamuna, which is the confluence of the famous rivers Brahmaputra and Padma. Jamun flow south where it enters into the Bay of Bengal which borders the entire southern side of Bangladesh. Most of the country is flat and interwoven with a dense network of rivers and streams, which allowed for an even allocation of cities across the country. The only mountain area is located on the border with Burma, its jewel is Lake Kaptai. In the northeast, huge tea plantations can be found in gently rolling countryside and well-preserved forests. The most attractive tourist destinations such as Sundarban, where there are still Bengal tigers, are located in the southwest. In the southeast is the longest natural beach in the world, Cox's Bazaar, as well as the port of Chitagong, where the old ships are disposed of. We recommend to choose Turkish Airlines for your journey to Bangladesh. The route from Prague will take you through Istanbul before you reach Dhaka. The whole flight takes about 13 hours.
